Short history of the breed
West Siberian Laikas originate from aboriginal Hanty and Mansi people of east Ural and Ob River watershed. Before the war, Russian explorers and hunters seeing exceptional physical and working qualities of these dogs, extracted best specimen for a breeding program which soon resulted in the making of the breed. After the war, under the supervision of E.I. Shereshevsky and the government kennel, the breeding continued. Since the 50's the kennel produced 4 generations and 400 puppies were distributed to hunters nation wide. By the mid 60's the breed was well established and popular among hunters of taiga regions.
